The Collationes Credo in Deum (translated as the Sermon-Conferences on the Apostles' Creed) were given by Saint Thomas Aquinas during the last year of his life in a Lenten series for the parish church of Naples. Longer and more organized than typical eucharistic homilies, these sermons are expositions of doctrine. They offer a rare glimpse of this great philosopher in a pastoral context preaching a catechetical theology for adults.
The Sermon-Conferences of St. Thomas Aquinas on the Apostles Creed makes available this classic work of Thomas Aquinas in a translation from the Leonine Commission text. With a brief introduction prefacing each esction. Nicholas R. Ayo, C.S.C., has provided the text and translation of facing pages for easy reading. The Latin text is an unpublished version provided by the Leonine Commission and remains subject to possible revisions before publication in Volume 44 of the Opera Omnia on Thomas Aquinas. Ayo includes comprehensive and scholarly introductory material and helpful appendices on the Creed's history and division, as well as versions of the Creed as it has appeared throughout the centuries. The translation is literal and straighforward, ideal for students in theology and Latin. The Sermon-Conferences of St. Thomas Aquinas on the Apostles Creed will also appeal to the student and teacher of catechetics, general studies of the Creed, and medieval study programs.
Nicholas R. Ayo, C.S.C., teaches theology in the Program of Liberal Studies at the University of Notre Dame.
