This attractive and interesting "Jubilee" medal of St. Benedict was first struck in 1880 at the Monastary of Monte Cassino to celebrate the 1400th anniversary of his birth. The letters to be found (in Latin) and the words they stand for (in English) are as follows C.S.P.B. - "The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict," C. S.S.M.L. - "May the Holy Cross be my light," N.D.S.M.D. "Let not the dragon be my guide." V.R.S.N.S.M.V.S.M.Q.L.I.V.B. - "Begone Satan! Suggest not vain things to me. Evil is the cup thou offerest; Drink thou thine own poison." Around the margin is the inscription: "May His presence protect us in the hour of our death."
