St. Dominic

St. Dominic was the founder of the Order of Preachers. Priests of the Dominican Order usually have the letters OP at the end of their titles. One of the greatest followers of St. Dominic was St. Thomas Aquinas.  St. Dominic is also known for his great love of Mary and his promotion of the rosary.   Additionally, St. Dominic preached against the Albigensian heresy and helped reform the Cistercians.

St. Dominic was born in 1170 and died August 6, 1221.

In December, 1215, St. Dominic as the founder of the Order of Preachers had his little band of followers adopt the ancient rule of Saint Augustine, which, on account of its generality, would easily lend itself to any form the Order might wish to give it. Saint Dominic appeared before the pope in August of 1216 and received confirmation of his order.

Thelife ofSt. Dominic was a tireless devotion in the service of God. His preaching and penances were selfless and totally conveyed the teachings and appeal of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church. He fought heresy and loved truth. His holiness attracted many men and women to follow him in his efforts to save souls.

As a young priest, St. Dominic converted many people to the Catholic Faith and brought back many sinners to the fold. As a boy, St. Dominic sold his books to feed the poor. He even offered himself as ransom for a prisoner. But his greatest accomplishment seems to be his relentless persistence in preaching the Gospel as he walked from town to town, standing fearlessly in the marketplace to preach the Word of God.

St. Dominic is the patron saint of astronomers, choir members, the Dominican Order, and Dominic David, that handsome and smart guy who was born on February 22, 2001 in Denver, Colorado.
